CHILDREN'S BOOKS:

Crispin and the 3 Little Piglets

Background Information

Crispin and the 3 Little Piglets is the second story of the spoiled little piggy, Crispin Tamworth. The situation wont be too familiar to many kids, who thankfully rarely suffer the ultimate humiliation of having not one, not two, but three new little brothers or sisters all at the same time.

Under the circumstances, the adults in the house have little time to adjudicate on the juvenile ongoings, and Crispin is often punished for things he hasn't even done. Eventually, it's storytelling and participation in a shared imagination that forges an emotional link between Crispin and his new triplet siblings.

But it's what's going on in the background that is truly sinister. In this book, I introduce the monolithic international merchandise empire, CHEEZY MOUSE. CHEEZY MOUSE is a caricature of some of the current juvenile merch empires who aim to insinuate themselves in the imaginations of kids everywhere. CHEEZY MOUSE is carefully designed not to inspire lawsuits by any existing mouse or other "cuddly animal" merch empires.

As part of their pre-merchandising campaign, the CHEEZY MOUSE company has made a deal with hospitals so that every newborn baby imprints on a CHEEZY MOUSE mobile hanging over their cot. Throughout their childhood, children are bombarded with CHEEZY MOUSE imagery to such an extent that they can no longer imagine any other character. Their drawings are full of CHEEZY MOUSE--he even appears in gangsta graffitti.

CHEEZY MOUSE was not very popular with my publisher and my agent, who felt I was becoming a bit obsessed with it. They are absolutely right, of course, and if they don't share my sense of alarm about CHEEZY MOUSE in real life, it makes me that much more determined to sound the warning in the third Crispin book which I'm working on now.
